When to use a random team picker

Picking teams by hand is slow and somebody always ends up picked last. A random split is quick and nobody can argue with it. People use this one for:

  • Splitting a class into project groups or reading groups.
  • Making teams for charades, Pictionary, trivia night or a scavenger hunt.
  • Pairing people up for a team-building exercise or breakout rooms.
  • Picking five-a-side football or pickup basketball teams.

Tips for fair teams

If your group has a few very strong players, shuffle twice and keep the split that looks most balanced, or run the generator separately for the strong players and everyone else, then merge them team by team.

Questions people ask

How does the random team generator work?

It shuffles your list with a Fisher–Yates shuffle, which gives every possible order an equal chance, then deals the names into teams one at a time like a deck of cards. Team sizes never differ by more than one person.

Can I make random groups for a classroom?

Yes. Paste your class list once; it's saved in your browser so you can reshuffle groups for every activity. Choose 'People per team' to make groups of 3 or 4.

Is my list of names stored anywhere?

Only in your own browser, so it's there next time. Nothing is sent to a server.

What if the names don't split evenly?

Some teams get one extra person. For example, 10 people in 3 teams makes teams of 4, 3 and 3.
